Stamkos and Malkin on lucky 13s... Downie not soft since Jan 1st... Niemi playing like Huet... Barker scores in debut... Getzlaf proves something... The Bloge Super Bowl ad
Two stars go into the Olympic break on 13 game point streaks... Steve Stamkos is 10+13=23 in his last 13 and has multi-point games in six of his last eight and Geno Malkin has 8+14=22 during his streak with a crazy 24 PIMs to boot. We'll see if the two week break helps Stamkos and how the Olympic pressure affects Geno down the stretch.
Two more points yesterday extended Steve Downie's point streak to seven games where he has 4+6=10. If you go back to January 1st, he's 8+12=20, plus-13, 71 PIMs and 38 shots in 21 games... that's the kind of all-around production that wins pools.
Vinny Prospal doesn't seem too put out by Gaborik's absence as he's 5+5=10 over his last seven games... he seems to be looking for his shot more lately as he has 29 sog in his last seven which is well above his normal pace.
Antti Niemi started and won his fourth straight for the Hawks but he's been looking like Cristobal Huet doing it as he's given up 12 goals & has a sv% under .900 over these four wins.
Patrick Sharp heads into the break on a bit of a tear as he has multi-point games in each of his past four, good for 3+6=9 in total... he is quietly on pace for a career year with close to 70 points and a boffo 270 shots.
Cam Barker scored in his first game with the Wild, playing close to 20 minutes with almost four minutes on the PP... we'll reiterate that we think he'll get a nice boost from this trade and is a dman worth taking a long look at.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
Amazing what a player can do when he has something to prove... well Ryan Getzlaf wanted to prove to Steve Yzerman that his ankle was ok, so he went out last night and put up four points on the Oilers... message received.
Two other Olympic scares turned out to be nothing as Sidney Crosby blocked a shot yesterday but didn't miss a shift and Patrick Kane took a knee-on-knee hit but was able to continue and he says he's fine.
What's distracting us today? We were getting a bit worried about the guys at Bloge Salming... two weeks and no videos making fun of the Leafs and Burkie? WTF? Well lucky for us (and you) they are back and this time Rickard Wallin and Chris Chelios are in their sights.
