Fantasy winners & losers from the Leafs trades... potential boost for Jokinen... give Foster, Yandle & Flash a look... Upshall looks done... memories of Douggie
So the Leafs picked up Dion Phaneuf in a seven player deal with the Flames and get JS Giguere from the Ducks for two bad contracts... both clear wins for the Leafs but we won't get into the trade analysis as everyone is getting in on that act... we're more interested in the fantasy implications:
WINNERS: Phaneuf gets a slight upgrade as this trade should give him a jump and he can't be much worse than he's been this year, just watch out for his plus/minus to drop but he should get the green light to take lots of stupid penalties. We'd say Matt Stajan gets a boost as he'll probably get a chance to play with Iginla. Good news in the short-term for Tyler Bozak as he should be playing with Kessel, at least until Grabovski comes back. Big win for Giggy as he goes from barely playing at all to probably playing more than half the games down the stretch (albeit for the worst defensive team in the league). Could be a good move for Jason Blake but the dude sucks so probably not (at the least he'll get some sun on his ghostly complexion). Someone will have to eat up Phaneuf's PP time in Calgary, Jay Bouwmeester is probably the best option, so that should give him a boost.
LOSERS: Phil Kessel loses the Cman that he's clicked with the best in Toronto, so that won't help but the PP should be improved so that may offset the loss. Ian White's having a very fine season but on a real team he's a #5/6 dman who doesn't see a ton of minutes, so we can't see him getting the same opportunities in Calgary. For some reason, Craig Conroy still sees time on the #1 line with Iginla but with some added depth up front, hopefully those days are gone (for Iggy's sake). Dan Sexton loses out for the Ducks as he's been sent to the minors.
There are also reports that the Flames are close to dealing Olli Jokinen to the Rangers for Higgins and Kotalik but the deal is on hold right now. If it does goes through we don't see a lot of fantasy impact although Jokinen has big potential for a boost as he'll probably get a chance to center the top line with Gaborik... more if this ends up going through.
Two more points for Kurtis Foster yesterday and after starting the year with 3+3=6 in his first 22 games, he now has 4+15=19 in his last 22 games.
Tommie Fleischmann added two assists yesterday and he has 1+7=8 in his last six games... give him a look as the Caps play four times this week. He also has the added bonus of dual wing eligibility in some leagues.
Peter Mueller got a chance to play a lot more last night (17:01) and he delivered with a three point game... we're not convinced that he can turn around his brutal season but he's worth keeping an eye on as the kid has a ton of potential and is only 21.
Keith Yandle is on a little run with 4+1=5 and a plus-7 in his last four games... we love this kid's game, we just wish he'd chip in a few more shots and deliver on his potential to put up some big PIMs.
Jimmy Howard has faced 95 shots over his past two games but only gave up three goals and stole three points for the Wings... he's the guy in Detroit, that's clear but we just wanted to point out how big this guy is playing, he just needs some more goal support as the Wings are 26th in the league in scoring.
Big fantasy night for Marian Gaborik as he had a hat-trick, was a plus-3 with four PIMs, six shots and had the game winner... all that and from the highlights it looked like he could have had six goals.
The Caps have sent Michal Neuvirth down to the AHL and he'll stay there through the Olympic break so they'll probably go with Jose Theodore for the next little while until Varlamov is ready to return.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
The prognosis on Scottie Upshall's knee injury is in and it ain't good news, he'll have surgery to fix a torn MCL and is likely done for the season... tough break as he was having a nice fantasy season.
Henrik Lundqvist missed the past two games with the flu, at least that's the story.
Robert Lang missed last night's game with an undisclosed injury... not sure what he's got or when he'll be back but you shouldn't really care.
Returning to action from the injured list yesterday was: Jere Lehtinen, David Booth, Jack Johnson, Alex Goligoski, Tyler Kennedy, Mike Smith and Jose Theodore.
What's distracting us today? With all the Burkie and Sutter craziness happening we can't help but think back to the last blockbuster trade between Calgary and Toronto. Of course, we're talking about this famous (or infamous if you're a Flames fan) trade:
Doug Gilmour, Jamie Macoun, RIc Nattress, Kent Manderville and Rick Wamsley
Gary Leeman, Alexander Godynyuk, Jeff Reese, Michel Petit and Craig Berube
Ouch. We'll see if Leaf fans end up as happy with Phaneuf as they were with Douggie G. Oh, since we're talking Douggie we must show our favourite Gilmour video... it's all kinds of awesome:
