Congrats to Giggy but don't get carried away... Poni's value increasing... Theo very solid... Avs rookies & an old Star... Kronwall having a tough time... who needs Taylor Hall?
JS Giguere didn't waste any time making a good impression in T.O. as he stopped all 30 shots he faced to shutout the Devils last night in his Leafs debut. A good start and we've always thought this guy was a solid goalie (before last year's .900, his sv% hadn't been below .910 since the 1990s) but lets not get carried away here as the Leafs are still the worst defensive team in the league (although they're a decent 15th in shots allowed) and they'll likely have a hard time scoring for the rest of the season.
Dion Phaneuf's debut was also solid for the Leafs as he played physical and dropped the gloves... finishing with a nice fantasy line: plus-1, 5 PIMs and 4 sog.
Still with the powerhouse Leafs, Alexei Ponikarovsky added another assist last night and he's on a run where he has 4+7=11 in his last eight games... this certainly can't hurt his trade value and if you grab him then you added bonus that he's likely to get moved to a contender (perhaps the Penguins???).
Sergei Kostitsyn replaced Cammalleri on a line with Plekanec and Pouliot last night and had a goal & an assist. Prior to last night he had two points in his previous 21 games, so he certainly cannot have much confidence. Expect the Habs to give him a look in this spot but we doubt it lasts... we've lost most of our faith in this guy.
It would be pretty difficult to really suck while your team is on an 11 game winning streak but we wouldn't put it past Jose Theodore... but actually, he's been very solid lately winning eight in a row with a 1.95 gaa & .944 sv%, so those of you that avoid this guy like grim death might want to give him a short-term look.
Alex Semin extended his point streak into the double digits (aka 10 games) and he's had 6+11=17 during the run. Semin's linemate, Brooks Laich, is feeding off his streak as well as he has 4+1=5 and a plus-6 in his last six games.
Brandon Yip registered two more goals last night and he's been impressive lately with 3+4=7 in his last seven games. He's found a spot on a line with Matt Duchene and his minutes have increased to around the 15-18 minute level but he's still not putting a lot of pucks on net as he only has 12 in his last seven games.
Another Avs rookie, TJ Galiardi, busted out the old four assist game last night... well played TJ. He's been putting up a few points lately, now 3+5=8 in his last eight games and has really been seeing a lot of ice-time, upwards of 18-20 minutes a night... he's one to keep an eye on.
From young bucks to old dogs as the 39-year old Mike Modano is on a little run with 7+2=9 in his last 10 games.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
Niklas Kronwall left last night's game with a LBI, he's expected to miss tonight's game and we're not sure after that.
Josh Harding couldn't go last night, his sore hip must be acting up, hopefully its just a day-to-day thing.
Joe Corvo is expected to return tonight after missing 28 games with a broken leg... grab him quick as he's a consistent 40 point dman and those guys aren't typically floating around your waiver wire.
Returning to action from the injured list last night was: Marek Svatos, Tomas Holmstrom, Robert Lang and Sami Salo.
What's distracting us today? Is it too early to call Brian Burke a genius?
A 3-0 win over the Devils.... including a JS Giguere shutout:
Not to mention a Dion Phaneuf fight... now that's what we call truculence:
Congrats Leaf fans, you've had a rough year... we hope you enjoy this one. Just don't look at the NHL standings this morning.
