Teemu: finish with a flash?... Karlsson & Ennis could be playoff sleepers... Poni a bust... nervous for Fleury & Quick... Green with 'minor ailment'... another Bruins spot
HEADS UP: Our 2010 Playoff Pool Guide is in the works and will be out by April 12th, at the latest... so come back soon to grab it (only $4.00), as we all could use a little help from our friends.
If this is the end for Teemu Selanne then he's going out with a bang as he had two more goals last night and has 6+9=15 in his last 10 games... maybe this will convince him to stick around? His linemate, Saku Koivu, has 4+5=9 in his last four. His other linemate, Jason Blake, is doing alright as well but we've got no time for that dude.
Erik Karlsson continues to impress as he scored last night and was a plus-2 while playing over 21 minutes with five coming on the PP. He now has 4+7=11 in his last eight games and if you're a Sens-believer then give him a whirl in your playoff pool.
The Sabres Tyler Ennis continued to produce during his late season call-up, with three points last night he now has 2+5=7 in six games. He's been filling in for Tim Connolly but with this production they may need to find a place for him once Timmy comes back... Ennis could be a sleeper pick in playoff pools.
Alexei Ponikarovsky is proving to be a bit of a bust in Pittsburgh as he hasn't scored in his last eight games and only has 2+7=9 with a minus-5 in 15 games with the Penguins.
Not sure what's gotten into Sean Bergenheim lately but playing with Tavares & Comeau has helped as he has 4+4=8 with a plus-9 in his last five games and even dropped the gloves last game. If I recall correctly he had a similar run near the end of last year but then could only translate that into a 23 point season this year (so far).
We're still not really convinced but should mention that Brian Boucher shutout the Leafs last night, has won two straight and three of his last five... outside of giving up five to the Islanders a few games back, he's only given up a total of five goals in the other four games over the past week & a half.
MA Fleury was pulled last night after allowing three goals on 12 shots to the Caps and if I'm the Penguins, I'm a little worried about my tending heading into the post-season. His sv% this season (.904) is annoying low, he's struggled in his last two weeks (2.86 & .887) and has been below average since January 1st (11-9-5, 2.89 & .902 in 31 games).
Jonny Quick gave up three goals on eight shots before being yanked last night and this extends his winless streak to six games. Over his last 11 games, he's 2-5-2 with a 2.96 gaa & .899 sv%, not how you want to roll into the playoffs... hopefully the Kings have Jonathan Bernier on speed-dial as they may need him before this season is through.
Shout-out to one of our favourite prospects, Carolina's Drayson Bowman, on his first two NHL goals last night... its been a rough first year in the pros for Dray as he only managed 17+15=32 with a minus-19 in 56 games in the AHL after putting up back-to-back 40 goal seasons in the dub. We're certainly not as high on him as we were coming into this year but we still like the potential.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
When Mike Green sat out Monday's game we thought he was just resting but then he sat out Tuesday's game as well with what the Caps are calling a "minor ailment" and they said that his scratch was just a precaution... bad news for those of you with him in your lineup this week (like me) but let's hope he gets that cleared up before the playoffs.
Brenden Morrow has a bruised foot and he couldn't play last night but is listed as day-to-day.
Blake Comeau continued his hot streak with another goal last night (he has 5+2=7 in his last four games) but was forced to leave the game early due to a foot injury, he'll be re-evaluated today.
Manny Legace removed himself from last night's game early... he has an undisclosed injury but the team did disclose that he's day-to-day.
Joni Pitkanen left last night's game early with an undisclosed injury... no word on the extent either.
Geno Malkin was sick last night so he didn't play.
Patrik Berglund is not expected to play tonight as he has a UBI.
Returning to action from the injured list last night was: Bryan Little, Ryan Callahan, Ryan Malone, Phil Kessel and Steve Bernier.
What's distracting us today? A whole heap of little things...
- If you think the refs 'let 'em play' in the playoffs?'.... you'd be wrong, according to Behind The Net.
- Halak-nophobia is the most ridiculous headline we've ever read.
- New blog Blades of Funny has a closer look at NHL websites... Luongo owners you might want to stay away from the TSN entry.
- Finally, thanks to Stoeten for another Bruins Hockey Rules commercial. This one features David Krejci but we're not too sure what the 'rule' is:
