Fantasy Hockey Scouts: Daily Dosage - May 29th, 2010

Dosage Express
A former star now a bust... Tlusy signs with Canes... the best goalie outside of the NHL now has a contract... what you talkin' bout Messier?

Daily Diarrhea

When he was drafted 15th overall in 2006 by the Lightning, Riku Helenius was to be one of the top netminder prospects out there.  Now... not so much. He's struggled since he turned pro in 2008 and now he's going to play next season Sweden.  He's looking like a bust and if you own him in a keeper league it might be time to cut bait.  For more on Helenius check out this great article from Hockey or Die.

Some more signings for us to take a look at...

The Hurricanes have signed Jiri Tlusty to a one year, $500,000 deal.  He had only six points in 20 NHL games last year but he has shown flashes of talent in the past (66 points in 66 AHL games in 2008-09).  He was a first round pick (13th overall) in 2006 so he better start producing soon or he'll be saddled with the bust label.

The Panthers have signed Jacob Markstrom to a three year entry level deal (although it hasn't officially be announced).  Markstrom is considered by many to be the best goalie outside of the NHL and you can see why looking at his numbers this year (2.01 and .927).  It wouldn't surprise us if the kid gets some NHL time this season... particularly if Tomas Vokoun gets moved as expected.

Pittsburgh traded for and signed goalie Mattias Modig.  They picked him up for a 6th round pick from the Ducks.  Considering he didn't cost much it was a good move for the Pens.  He put up some okay numbers in the SEL the last two years so we'll see how he handle's the North American game.

The Lightning signed d-man Mark Barberio to an entry level deal.  He was a 6th round pick but has put together some great seasons with Moncton (60 points in 65 games this year).  He'll man the point in the AHL and try to prove he can handle the pro game.
