Congrats to Hawks & Fans... Toews wins Conn by default, Keith & Kane have gripes... Briere with great finals... Blake done... Upshall re-signs... Geoffo takes the cake (& Tee)... JR gently weeps
Jonathan Toews took home the Conn Smythe despite not scoring a goal, only adding three assists and being a minus-5 in the finals... I guess he wins by default as he led the Hawks in scoring in the playoffs and none of the other candidates really stood out to the voters... I guess? My vote would have went to Duncan Keith, 1+6=7 & minus-1 in the finals and 17 points in 22 playoff games... but sadly, I don't get a vote.
Pat Kane had the OT GWG last night on a bit of a weird one (nice Cup winning goal call (silence) by Jim Hughson btw, jeez people complain about Bob Cole not seeing things)... he would have been another solid choice as he was 3+5=8 (& a minus-4) in the finals and finished only one point behind Toews in team scoring with 10+18=28 in 22 games... but the voters actually submit their ballots before the game ends so I'd be curious to know if any would have switched to Kane if they could have.
With a three point game last night, Danny Briere ended up passing Toews to take the playoff scoring title with 12+18=30 in 23 games. He had 3+9=12 in the finals which was the most points in the finals since Mario back in '91, pretty impressive.
Rob Blake is hanging them up, sad to see him go as he was a fantasy contributor right up till the end and had a monster season with 45 points, 110 PIMs & nearly 200 shots as a 39-year old in 2008/09... more on him tomorrow.
Hershey tied up the Calder Cup finals at two all as John Carlson had the game winner late in the 3rd period. Carlson's had a pretty quiet playoffs for Hershey with only three points in 11 games but this guy is a gamer who has shown a knack for scoring big goals and he'll be bringing that to the Caps on a full-time basis next season.
The Coyotes re-signed RFA Scottie Upshall to a one-year deal... he had a torn ACL that knocked him out of the last 27 games of the regular season but had a pretty nice season going prior to that and projected over 82 games his numbers would have looked like this: 30+23=53, 84 PIMs & 199 shots... definitely useful, so keep him in mind for next year.
We'll have more on this tomorrow but congrats to Geoffo Reith for taking the title in our FHS Playoff Pool (check link for standings)... it came down to the wire but the 3-point night & OT winner from Pat Kane put him over the top. As the champ, Geoffo will be keeping warm at night in a new Tee from PuckingHilarious.
What's distracting us today?
- Not much more needs to be said about this... Jeremy Roenick balling on national TV about his Hawks winning the Cup... this is why we like Mike Milbury cause he calls him out for being such a baby.
And for those of you that don't care to see a grown man cry, here's a CBC Playoff Montage put to music from a very fitting (being from Chicago) and very solid (in this Scout's opinion) band, the Smashing Pumpkins:
