Lidstrom back for farewell tour... Oiler's top prospect's future prospects... hit the rumour mill... Don Cherry what were you thinking?

Daily Diarrhea

Big news for the Red Wings as Nicklas Lidstrom is coming back.  He signed a one year extension for $6.2 million dollars.  The Wings were hoping to get him a bit cheaper so they could sign their other free agents... but the rumoured increase in the salary cap probably made this deal possible.  His production has decreased the last three years but he should be good for around 40-50 points (he scored 49 last year).

One prospect we're very keen about (and not just because we own him in a keeper league) is Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson.  MPS signed an entry level deal with the Oilers yesterday and he immediately becomes one of the most talented players in their system.  Check out this classic quote from MPS: "I like to make goals and assists".  Yes you go Magnus.  He won't be in Sweden next year and it's very possible he plays a good chunk of time with the big club... although it's no guarantee.  The upside for next year is a 40-50 point rookie season if he gets the games played.  Grab him if you can, especially in keeper leagues.

The Bruins signed Yuri Alexandrov to a two year entry level contract.  He was drafted in the 2nd round by Boston back in 2006 and he's been playing in the KHL the last two seasons.  He his 21 points in 56 games last year shows he has some offensive ability and power play potential but he'll need to show he can play he North American game.

We usually shy away from rumours here but what can we say... it's a slow news day.  To the rumour mill:

Brian Burke said that two teams have shown interest in acquiring Tomas Kaberle and that "they were more than nibbles".  Click here for the video.  One of the teams rumoured is the Blue Jackets who have apparently offered up their fourth overall pick... which would be a very bad trade for one year of Kaberle.

Okay the source on this one is pretty suspect and poorly written (Bleacher Report via the excellent Lowetide) so the chances of it being accurate are slim  (although references to ESPN.com and 98.5 The Sports Hub are mentioned... with no links). But we kinda like the sound of it.  TO BOSTON: 1st overall pick, Sheldon Souray.   TO EDMONTON: 2nd overall, 15th overall, Blake Wheeler.  Souray is an excellent sleeper, particularly if he gets moved to another team and Wheeler could definitely use a change of scenery.

Injury Updates

Artem Anisimov suffered a bone chip in his right wrist during the World Championships and underwent surgery yesterday to repair it.  He'll be out 4-6 weeks meaning he'll be good to go to start training camp

Daily Distraction

What's distracting us today?

- Chris Pronger's other jerk moves from Down Goes Brown

- Head on over to Hockey Jackass and check out the terrible Dustin Byfuglien tribute song 'Buff Daddy'.  Bad... really bad.

- Just in case you missed ther CBC feed of Game #2... or you haven't checked out any other hockey websites today.  Have a look at Don Cherry just embarrassing himself.  It reminds us of when a little kid memorizes a speech even though they have no idea what the words mean:
