Spezza wants out (not likely)... Holmer back... Budaj back... who's the real GM of the Year???... Tavares will be fine... the perfect storm of distractions: Fraser, Bettman & Pronger
It seems pretty legit that the Senators are looking to move Jason Spezza and that he wouldn't mind if that happened but with a cap hit of 7 large, its probably unlikely to happen. Spezza could probably use a change of scenery so if you own him you're probably hoping that GM Bryan Murray can find a way to give him away to somebody like he did with Dany Heatley last summer.
Reports say that Tomas Holmstrom is close to re-signing with the Wings... we tend to avoid him as he breaks down way too often but he has been remarkably consistent over the past five years as his points-per-game average has always been between .66 & .73, unfortunately the number of games played has fluctuated between 53 & 81 over that span.
The CBJs signed their 2009 4th rounder, David Savard, to a ELC... he was CHL dman of the year this season after a big season with 77 points 64 games for Moncton. He's likely to return to Jr. next season but is one to watch as the CBJs are always in need of skilled blueliners.
The Avs re-signed goalie Peter Budaj to a one-year deal, so he'll return in his role as Craig Anderson's caddy for another season. Budaj only got into 15 games last and while he performed well (2.64 & .917), he's really not fantasy useful unless Anderson comes down with a major injury.
Here's a signing from a few days ago that we may have glossed over... the Preds signed Finnish goalie Atte Engren to a ELC. Engren's a 22-year old who was the Preds 7th round pick back in 2007 and he had a big season this year leading TPS to the SM-Liiga title with a 2.63 & .920 in the regular season and 1.82 & .935 in the playoffs. He's likely headed to Milwaukee in the AHL next season and we'll be keeping a close eye on him.
We put up a new poll yesterday asking who should be the GM of the Year for this season... the GMs themselves decided that it was Don Maloney of the Coyotes but we didn't really like their choice. This scout's vote was for Dale Tallon... sure he's made some bad signings but he did a lot of good things over the past few years that turned the Hawks into the likely eventual champs. Chiarelli's another option simply for fleecing Brian Burke on the Kessel trade, David Poile makes cake out of crap every year, Dean Lombardi for his patient and excellent rebuild of the Kings is another solid choice and others deserve some consideration... so go ahead and rock the vote!
Texas took the first game of the Calder Cup finals over Hershey last night and while he was pointless, the big fantasy story of the playoffs in the A has been Jamie Benn as he's been leading the Stars and the entire league in playoff goals & points with 14+10=24 in 19 games. He had an underrated rookie year with 22+19=41 while playing all 82 games for Dallas and with his performance in the AHL it really looks like a breakout next year is likely.
From our (fantastic) department of self congratulations... we added a new Testimonial page that contains some of the nicer things that our lovely readers have said about us... including, "Thanks", "Love the site" and, of course, "If I win my league again this year we can go pick out curtains together"... ummm... OK.
John Tavares revealed yesterday that he picked up a fractured foot over at the Worlds... don't fret JT owners, he'll be fine, he'll miss about a month of offseason training but will have lots of time to get back at it and will be ready to go for training camp.
What's distracting us today?
- Best list of available free agents we've seen to date from Fanhouse... although we think Paul Kariya and Joe Corvo aren't getting much love.
- Dale Hawerchuk.... is back. Well he's back coaching. But still, Hawerchuk is pretty cool.
- Kerry Fraser.... is also back. Kinda. Intent to Blow tells us he's been a very busy boy since breaking Leaf hearts in 1993.
- Bettman v. MacLean... Kurtenblog style.
- View From My Seats with a fantastic f&%#ing proposal... sign us up.
- Ron MacLean is a superhero... thankfully DGB tells us what he was really thinking.
- Has Chris Pronger lost the plot? Seriously... we guess as long as he holds Jonathan Toews to one point in three game Philly fans can over look his mental snaps.
