Drury breaks finger... Smith with bad finger... Skinner to sign... Hodgson cleared for "practice contact"... Josi breaks wrist... Malkin & Sid together?... Sid makes house calls
HEADS UP... alright fantasy freaks, the 2010/11 Fantasy Scouting Report hit the shelves Aug 31st (and was updated Sept 9th & another update is coming today), so get yourself a copy & win your goddam pool (like these glorious dudes)
Chris Drury suffered a broken finger in camp and he's going to be out for 4 weeks, so he'll likely miss the first few games of the regular season. His fantasy relevant days were slipping away anyway as after only 32 points last year, we're not expecting him to crack the 40 point level this year. He'll still see some decent ice-time & occasionally jump on the PP but he's more of a checking line guy now under Torts.
TB's Mike Smith also suffered a finger injury yesterday, not sure on the extent yet but finger injuries for goalies can be bad news so stay tuned. Smith's got enough problems with head injuries that he certainly doesn't need this. He's in the mix for the starting job in T-Bay but we think Dan Ellis is the wiser choice and see a 50/30 split in terms of starts.
The Hurricanes are expected to sign Jeff Skinner, the 7th overall pick in this summer's draft, to an entry level contract today and all indications are that he's going to make the team out of training camp... the kid can score & Carolina needs that, so maybe he'll end up in a prime role. We're just getting our head around what the expectations should be for this kid's rookie season but we'll be keeping them pretty low.
Cody Hodgson isn't going full out at practice yet and will sit out the Canucks first pre-season game tonight but he's been cleared for "practice contact" (WTF is that?) and the team thinks he'll be ready to play in games later this week... so good news for the kid.
Preds prospect Roman Josi broke his wrist in training camp and will be out for 4-6 weeks so that kills his chances to make a strong impression and crack the roster. He'll start out in the A when he recovers and try to work his way up from there. We like the kid a lot as he's ranked #64 in our Fantasy Prospect Rankings.
There's talk out of Penguins camp that with Jordan Staal out that maybe Geno Malkin will line up on Crosby's wing to start the year... while that sounds great, these guys already play together a lot, so this is really nothing new and I don't think the two of them can play together permanently as there's typically only one puck on the ice at a time, and both these guys want it. But this is sure to boost Malkin's value at upcoming drafts as he appears to be severely underrated in a lot of draft rankings we've seen... we think you're getting a huge bargain if he slips out of the top 5 in your draft.
What's distracting us today?
- Craig Conroy with a great story from his first ever training camp in 1994.
- Hockey or Die takes a look at the worst the NHL.com store has to offer. A dream capsule? Really?
- Brian McFarlane asks "Can you believe the Montreal Canadiens once considered starting a game without a goaltender?"... check out It Happened in Hockey for an interesting story from 1970.
- Sid the Kid makes a house visit and delivers some seasons tickets to a Pens fan. Great idea by the Penguins. Hat tip to Hockey Now Blog.
