Anthony Stewart with the hat-trick last night for Atlanta... how you like them apples? Stewart came into the game with four goals in 108 career NHL games so we don't think he's suddenly turned himself into a sniper and this is likely the game of his life. He hasn't even been very productive in the AHL, so we'll pass.
Alex Goligoski had the OT GWG last night and has a point in each of the Penguins five games this year. Didn't see the game last night but caught some of the Pens game the other day and they're using Goligoski in a rover-type role (comparable to Niedermayer in Anaheim) on the PP and he looks to be thriving... so look for a big year from The Gos.
We talked up Matt Taormina in the Breakout Bible & the pre-season but we really didn't think the Devils would give him a legit chance so soon but he's obviously coach John MacLean's guy as he led the Devils in ice-time (24:42) & PP time (5:46) last night and had his first NHL goal to go along with six shots... so give him a look.
Two more assists last night for Blake Comeau and he has 3+3=6 in four games and is logging a lot of ice-time for the Islanders (over 20 minutes in each game so far). He's a streaky player so don't expect the production to last long term but he should get a boost when Tavares returns and is a nice waiver wire pick-up if you need help on LW right now.
Do we have a goalie controversy in Pittsburgh right now? Marc-Andre Fleury is struggling and they gave Brent Johnson his second start in the past three games last night. BJ did well stopping 22 of 24 and picked up his second win. We'd expect to see Fleury back in tonight but this is getting interesting.
Chris Thorburn is a guy to watch in Atlanta as he has goals in three straight and is seeing regular ice-time. He's been mostly a fourth line grinder-type player during his NHL career but Rick Dudley really likes this guy and was talking him up before the season as a guy who could play a bigger role... so far, so good as he's got three goals, a plus-4 and 11 PIMs in his first four games.
Clarke MacArthur had another goal last night for the Leafs, giving him five in four games... get him if you want to ride the hot streak but just don't expect this to last long term. This kid is not even a goal scorer really so this is out of the norm.
Carl Gunnarsson saw his ice-time go down to six minutes last night, not sure if he was hurt or just benched for the second half of the game (I didn't catch the game) but his play and ice-time have taken a step back this year.
It's been back-to-back games with less than 10 minutes of ice for Brayden Schenn as he only played seven minutes last night and is pointless (with a minus-2) through four games... could this be a sign that he's heading back to Jr. soon?
Have to mention the crazy 13 shots by Patrick Sharp last night and he squeezed two in.
The Stars waived Fabian Brunnstrom yesterday, we'll see if anyone puts in a claim but likely he's headed to the AHL. We weren't convinced about this guy from the beginning as he wasn't even really a star in Sweden, as he only had half a decent season in the SEL before coming to Dallas.
