Not sure if you've heard about this rookie, Logan Couture, for San Jose... he's alright... two goals last night, GWG, plus-2, 2 PIMs & 4 shots. He's been on a nice little run lately, can't recall if we've mentioned it, with 7+5=12, 10 PIMs & 39 shots over his last 12 games. He easily leads all rookies in goals and shots.
Antti Niemi got the call for his third straight start last night, interesting move by McLellan as Niemi was coming off a loss to Montreal but he made his coach look smart by stopping 25 of 27 to beat the mighty Wings. I don't think this is a sign but that Niemi is taking over the #1 job as I think the coach is just spotting his two goalies but the gap that existed between Niemi & Niittymaki earlier in the year is definitely converging.
The Caps Mathieu Perreault was called up yesterday and did what he always does when he's first called-up... produce. He had two goals last night in only 13 minutes of action while playing on the 2nd line with Semin & Laich. He's one to keep an eye on but he doesn't typically have staying power and we have some doubts about his upside.
Bill Guerin officially retired yesterday and as we do when a star retires, we give them the FHS send-off by highlighting their best fantasy season... usually we have a hard time cause there's so many great seasons to choose from but Guerin actually only topped 40 goals twice and 70 points once in his career...
So his best had to be 2000/01 when he had 40+45=85 with 140 PIMs & 289 shots in an unheard of 85 games split between Edmonton & Boston.
Pittsburgh played last night... not sure we even need to say it but Crosby had two points to extend his streak to 16 games and Fleury got his ninth straight win. Worth mentioning is that Chris Kunitz had two points and has 1+4=5 over his last five games, you'd really expect more from him since he's playing with Sid but Kunitz is just not that good.
Sergei Kostitsyn had an assist last night and has 1+3=4 & a plus-6 over his last three games. It's a little early to be recommending him but there's some encouraging signs there.
Michal Neuvirth took the SOL last night by giving up four goals on 28 shots and blowing a three goal 3rd period lead. He's without a win since Nov 17th and a collapse like this just helps Varlamov's case even more.
Tom Poti had three assists last night for the Caps and actually has 1+4=5 over his last four games but his problem has always been that he can't stay healthy... it's pretty ridiculous this year, he hasn't played more than four games in a row without missing time with an injury... you should just consider him day-to-day permanently and it'll be a bonus if he actually plays.
Fedor Tyutin was a healthy scratch last night for the CBJs... while he's not a big point producer, he has topped 30 in each of the last two seasons but only has four assists through 25 games this year.
Panthers prospect Jacob Markstrom has been pretty pathetic in the AHL this year and things aren't improving as he's 4-6-0, 3.84 & .875 over his last 10 games. He's only 20 and you have to expect young goalies, especially Europeans learning the NA game, to struggle a little but this is a little concerning. What he's done in Sweden & during international events gives us confidence that he'll evolve into a top goalie but you'll have to be patient.
The Bruins have sent Jordan Caron to the AHL as he had been a scratch the past two games since Marc Savard returned. It will be good to see how he produces in the AHL as we have some questions about his long-term fantasy upside.
Jeremy Morin has been sent down the AHL and will likely be named to the US WJC squad today... so he'll likely be missing for a few weeks over the holidays.
