Potential Pickups - Jan 12th, 2011

Jamie Benn did this. Just another reason he's the pick up of the week.
Jamie Benn did this. Just another reason he's the pick up of the week.

Below you'll find some players we think could be of interest to you and your fantasy team.  We'll suggest a few potential pickups for those of you in shallow leagues (40% or more owned in Yahoo! leagues), medium leagues (20%-40%) and deep leagues (< 20%). We'll also offer a few suggestions on players you might want to consider demoting, dropping or dealing for each type of league.

If you think I missed somebody... add it in the comments.  The more the merrier.

Statistics are up to Jan 10th, 2010 (i.e. do not include last nights games).

SHALLOW LEAGUES (>40% owned)

Ryan Suter (47%) with 1+18=19
He missed 11 games earlier in the year so his totals seem low but if you project his pace over an 82 game season he would put up 52 points.  Not too shabby at all.  He picked up 45 points, 73 PIM's and 143 shots in 2008-09... no reason he can't equal that pace at a minimum going forward.

Patrice Bergeron (49%) with 10+19=29
It seems like a long time ago, but once upon a time (pre-concussion) he was a 70+ point center.  I think those days might be gone but he should definitely be owned in more than half of the leagues out there.  He's on pace for a respectable 58 points, +24 and 200 shots.  But the big reason to grab him is he's been really hot lately with 14 points in 12 games.

Others we recommend:
Martin Havlat
(72%) with 10+28=38 (19th in the league in scoring)
Stephen Weiss (55%) with 13+13=26
Mikhail Grabovski (53%) with 17+16=33
Kevin Bieksa (52%) with 5+10=15
R.J. Umberger (51%) with 14+15=29
Clarke MacArthur (49%) with 12+22=34
Jeff Skinner (48%) with 14+18=32

Players to drop, demote or deal: Vincent Lecavalier (90%), Dion Phaneuf (82%), Tyler Myers (79%), Dustin Penner (77%), Erik Johnson (76%), Zach Parise (75%), Marc Savard (67%), Jay Bouwmeester (61%), Simon Gagne (57%), Steve Downie (52%), Ed Jovanovski (51%), Victor Hedman (51%), Zach Bogosian (48%), Mike Knuble (45%), Paul Martin (44%), Alex Frolov (42%) and Nikolay Zherdev (41%).

MEDIUM LEAGUES (20% to 40% owned)

Kris Versteeg (33%) with 12+19=31
Cam pointed this out in the comments the other day.  The general consensus is that Versteeg is having a poor season, but it was really just a poor start to the season (two points in his first nine games).  Since then he's been a pretty valuable fantasy asset (29 points in 31 games).  I think you can find room for a pivot who scores at that pace.  Only warning... watch out for the minus (currently -10).

Tuomo Ruutu (30%) with 10+23=33
I kinda hate Ruutu but even I went looking for him on the waiver wire in my leagues recently... 17 points in the last 14 games will do that.  This scoring pace is unprecedented for him but he does have a few 50+ points seasons under his belt.  He's getting good PP TOI and is showing nice chemistry with linemates Jeff Skinner and Chad LaRose.

Others we recommend:
Alexander Steen (40%) with 14+15=29
Tomas Fleischmann (40%) with 11+18=29
Marc Staal (40%) with 6+11=17
Jason Pominville (35%) with 8+12=20
Ray Whitney (34%) with 8+19=27
Jarret Stoll (32%) with 11+16=27
Wojtek Wolski (31%) with 6+10=16
Drew Stafford (23%) with 14+8=22
Bryan Little (29%) with 12+13=25
Kevin Shattenkirk (28%) with 5+15=20
Brian Boyle (26%) with 14+8=22
Nikolai Kulemin (20%) with 16+14=30

Players to drop, demote or deal: Michael Del Zotto (40%), Andrei Markov (29%), Nikita Filatov (22%), Wayne Simmonds (21%) and Alexei Ponikarovsky (21%)

DEEP LEAGUES (<20% owned)

Sergei Kostitsyn (15%) with 11+12=23
A month or so ago this guy was owned in only 1% of leagues.  It's been a crazy few week for Kostitsyn as he picked up 20 points in just the last 18 games... he had only three in 19 before that!  When somebody is over a point-a-game for that many games you have to find a spot for him in your lineup.

Jamie Benn (15%) with 11+15=26
We've been saying all year all Benn needed was a scoring line role and you'd get a breakout season.  He got the job and he's living up to our hype.  He's got 10 points in his last 11 games playing as the 2nd line RW and is now on pace for exactly 50 points.  He also chips in a few PIM's (on pace for 63) and shots (on pace for almost 200) so he needs to be snapped up in a few more leagues asap.

Others we recommend:
Sam Gagner (19%) with 10+16=26
T.J. Oshie (19%) with 1+9=10 (injury but back in the next few weeks)
Michael Frolik (18%) with 8+18=26
David Jones (15%) with 14+12=26
Cam Fowler (15%) with 3+18=21
Joe Corvo (14%) with 6+12=18
James van Riemsdyk (11%) with 10+9=19
Derek Stepan (10%) with 12+12=24
P.A. Parenteau (9%) with 9+15=24
Scottie Upshall (8%) with 12+8=20
Jeff Tambellini (6%) with 9+6=15
Jiri Hudler (6%) with 3+9=12
Colin Wilson (4%) with 10+11=21
Marc-Andre Bergeron (2%) with 0+0=0

Players to drop, demote or deal:Teddy Purcell (12%), Ian White (11%), Derick Brassard (20%), Saku Koivu (19%), Jason Arnott (17%), Alex Kovalev (15%) and David Perron (12%)

THE <1% SPECIAL - I'll try to find somebody of value that's owned in just 1% or fewer of Yahoo leagues.

Evgeni Dadonov (1%) with 3+7=10
He started his NHL career with eight points in eight games.  He has only two in six since but he's still playing on the top unit with Stephen Weiss and Michael Frolik.  He's not getting any PP time (average of 0:29 PP TOI this year) but you can't have it all for 1%.

Others we considered (notice we didn't say recommend): Marcel Goc (1%), Dmitry Kulikov (1%) and Mats Zuccarello (1%).
