It was a slow Sunday for fantasy news but with July 1st rapidly approaching we're in for a busy week...
The Ryan Smyth trade is official, so he heads back to Edmonton for a warm body (Colin Fraser) and a 7th rounder... he can still be effective, especially on the PP, so you can probably expect around .75 ppg but it's figuring out how his body will hold up that's the biggest issue. He's played less than 70 games in two of the last four seasons and has averaged 71 games a season since the lockout.
The Kings will likely dip into the FA market looking for a top 6 forward to replace Smyth as they have a hole on the left side now but if they're unable to identify someone then this could be a spot for Andrei Loktionov to step into. He's had terrible luck the past two seasons having surgery on each shoulder and that has limited his game action but he's still been productive with 8+23=31 in 34 AHL games last year and he managed 4+3=7 in 19 games for LA.
Florida has decided that they won't give qualifying offers to Steve Bernier and Niclas Bergfors, so both will become UFAs on July 1st. Bernier is a big waste of space so no surprise there but Bergfors is a player that has shown some promise and is only 24, so this is an odd move and I'd expect him to find a new home. Bergfors finished last season with 1.75 ESP/60mins which ranked third on the Panthers.
Florida has half its roster to fill and lots of cap space so we'll have to wait and see how this all shakes down before we get into who benefits but I'm really hoping that one of my favourite under-the-radar prospects, Michal Repik, gets a legit chance to prove what he can do. This guy has been patient putting up some decent numbers in the AHL the past three years and was called up to play out the string last season but didn't see a lot of ice-time... give this dude a chance!
