Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey Rankings: Make These Changes

New, 4 comments

We did a post similar to this last year (and the year before) and we heard from a bunch of readers that they found it very helpful, so let's see if we can help you again this year...

This is for those of you that will be doing a fantasy hockey draft on Yahoo!in the coming weeks. Yahoo has default pre-draft rankings that you can modify and we'd recommend that you do that based on what we advise below or in the heat of the moment you could end up with some pretty wacky picks or miss a real steal. This is particularly important if you plan on doing an autodraft.

Yahoo! also gives you the option in their draft tool to sort on Average Draft Position, which is a great idea but the problem is that with so many drafts being done by auto-pick, the ADP is heavily biased toward the default pre-draft rankings, so it doesn't really help you that much.

We should mention that Yahoo! does a decent job with their rankings (nothing close to the ESPN horror show)... it seems like someone gave it the old college try but when you're dealing with a life-or-death fantasy hockey draft (at least to some of us) then you want the job done right... so that's where we come in.

These should be pretty self-explanatory but we'll add some comments, the number indicates the overall Yahoo! ranking and when we refer to our ranking, we're talking about the rankings from our SuperStats projected stats file.

Guys Who Should be Higher(higher, as in closer to Ovechkin):

16 Evgeni Malkin - he's had his issues but will be a 1st rounder in most leagues.
59 Nicklas Lidstrom- pretty late for a guy we have as the 7th best dman.
75 Sidney Crosby - #75??? maybe if he missed 70 games... I'd take him top 10 & cross my fingers.
85 Brent Burns - could hit 50 points with nice peripherals in SJ.
105 Taylor Hall- everyone's favourite breakout pick (was #2 in the Breakout Bible)
107 Alex Pietrangelo - could explode this year.
113 Marian Hossa- fragile but c'mon, he's better than this.
118 Logan Couture - he's our boy, don't leave him waiting this long!
121 Ryan Callahan- a six-category stud.
123 Derek Roy - he's a point-a-game player, obviously punished for getting hurt last year.
124 Mikko Koivu - same as Roy.

Much more after the jump...

136 Alexander Edler- should have more responsibilities with Ehrhoff gone.
151 Ryan Suter - perpetually undervalued by Yahoo!.
160 Jamie Benn - won't have Richards but will get more chances.
163 James van Riemsdyk - most are expecting a big breakout.
183 Teemu Selanne - wow... maybe if he retired.
208 Dmitry Kulikov - our top dman breakout in the Bible.
242 Andy McDonald
277 T.J. Oshie - injury prone but worth the risk.
284 Max Pacioretty
311 Sam Gagner
314 Ales Hemsky - lots of value even if you took him 200 spots before this.
345 Brayden Schenn
347 Vinny Prospal- could win a job on the CBJs top line.
352 Guillaume Latendresse
363 Andrew Brunette - always underrated but he's very reliable.
373 Ville Leino - we don't love him but I'd take him this low in a heartbeat.
397 Jonathon Blum- will be top 4 dman in Nashville.
403 Tomas Fleischmann
424 Alexander Burmistrov - should play a major role in Winnipeg.
435 Stephane Da Costa - could win the Sens #2C job.
447 Nikita Filatov- lots of upside and should get a legit chance in Ottawa.
465 Zac Dalpe
474 Brendan Morrison - was the #1C in Calgary for most of last season.
504 Cody Hodgson
518 Matt Cullen - not great but he'll see lots of ice-time for the Wild.
524 Adam Larsson - worth taking a risk on.
531 Jiri Hudler- had an off-year but should bounce back.
536 Oliver Ekman-Larsson
537 Ray Emery- he's a longshot but some will want to take a chance on him.
635 Peter Regin- Yahoo! will pick Pascal Leclaire for you in this spot instead.
675 Sami Salo- sure he'll get hurt but ranked behind Jeff Woywitka???
696 Cam Barker - Jay has a hunch about this guy, so maybe Yahoo! has this right... zing!
732 Jared Spurgeon- someone on the Wild blueline has to play on the PP.
806 Luke Adam- AHL rookie of the year shows nice potential.
818 Brett MacLean
946 Erik Gudbranson
971 Mika Zibanejad - in the running for the Sens #2C spot.
999 Roman Josi- good looking prospect could make the Preds.
1019 Jonathan Huberdeau
1022 Dmitri Orlov
1030 Brett Connolly
1068 Sean Couturier
1109 Zack Kassian- could be a multi-cat stud if he makes the Sabres.
1132 Calvin de Haan
1151 Tim Erixon - should make the Rangers
1190 Ryan Murphy- has more upside than Rasmus Rissanen (in our opinion)
1308 Marco Scandella - the 2nd last guy on the entire list could actually make the Wild roster this year.

Guys Who Should be Lower (lower, as in closer to Mike Comrie):

5 Henrik Sedin - too high for a light-shooting Cman, we have him as 9th best skater.
17 Tomas Vokoun- 5th best goalie seems a little high... we have him ranked 11th.
66 Milan Lucic - we're not convinced that he'll shoot 17% again this season.
92 Ryan Whitney - foot problems are looking chronic and he's already hurt this year.
96 Jose Theodore - 8th round in a 12 team draft?... seems early.
103 Steve Mason - maybe if you want to play a hunch but I'd only take him later.
119 Mike Smith - could do well but I'd rather not pick him at all.
132 Devan Dubnyk - we like him to win the Oilers#1 job but I wouldn't take him ahead of Dubinsky.
145 Al Montoya- I have nfc what's going to happen with the Islanders goalies.
171 Sheldon Souray - could have a comeback year and will help in PIMs but he's unreliable.
179 Linus Omark- like him but wouldn't take him over J.Jokinen, Selanne or Laich.
186 Bryan McCabe - still no team.
188 Jarret Stoll - early for a guy who hasn't cracked 50 points in his last five seasons.
206 Sean Avery - you have to play to get PIMs and I'm not sure he will.
230 Matthew Lombardi - a question mark to even return.
247 Zenon Konopka - 307 PIMs last year but just nine points, depends on your league's cats.
264 Dan Carcillo - only if you want to goon it up.
358 Chris Campoli - looking for work.
386 Cory Stillman - retired.
407 Rob Schremp - signed in the SEL.

Our rankings (from our SuperStats spreadsheet) aren't perfect but they'll help you beat anyone who uses those rankings to pick their team.
