Week 23 - Free Agents and Trade Targets

New, 11 comments

This week, we are fishing in the Yahoo! pool...

Left Wings

Variously owned LWs worth adding (depending on the size of your league) or worth targeting via trade:
Patrik Elias (80%), Matt Moulson (77%), Ray Whitney (72%), Max Pacioretty (67%), Gabriel Landeskog (60%), Chris Kunitz (58%), Andrew Ladd (58%), Curtis Glencross (37%), Tyler Ennis (35%), Clarke MacArthur (20%), Sergei Kostitsyn (16%), Ryan Malone (14%), Carl Hagelin (11%), Colin Greening (5%).

St Louis Blues David Perron, LW

3 goals in his last 5 games, including 1 last night vs. Tampa Bay. Perron is getting top line minutes and seeing top PP duty for the team with the most points in the NHL.

Availability: Owned in 29% of leagues.
Forecast: Should be owned in virtually all standard leagues. Over his last 13 games, Perron has 9 points (4 goals, 5 assists) a +7 rating, 8 PIMs, 2 PPPs, and 24 SOGs.

Colorado Avalanche Jamie McGinn, LW

One of the best trade deadline acquisitions, McGinn has been a force for the Avs. He's seeing top line minutes, playing primarily with Paul Stastny and David Jones.

Availability: Owned in 13% of leagues.
Forecast: Over his last 8 games, McGinn has 10 points (7 goals, 3 assists), a +3 rating, 7 PIMs, 2 PPPs, and 29 SOGs. That kind of production should be more broadly owned.

Variously owned Cs worth adding (depending on the size of your league) or worth targeting via trade:
Logan Couture (89%), Vincent Lecavalier (80%), Jordan Staal (71%), Stephen Weiss (69%), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (64%), Mikhail Grabovski (62%), Matt Duchene (58%), Mike Fisher (31%), Patrik Berglund (21%), Antoine Vermette (10%), Kyle Brodziak (6%), Frans Nielsen (4%), Marcel Goc (2%).

Minnesota Wild Mikko Koivu, C

There was talk that he would return yesterday, but ultimately the Wild held their Captain out. Looking at the schedule, there is only 1 game before March 22nd, so he's either back for that OR back on the 22nd. In any event, his return is imminent.

Availability: Owned in 55% of leagues.
Forecast: Should be owned in virtually all leagues. So far this season, Koivu has 37 points in 45 games.

Deep league specials (owned in a small % of leagues):

St Louis Blues Jaden Schwartz, C

One NHL game, one goal. A power play marker and GWG, no less. So far, so good. The injury to Andy McDonald (likely done for the remainder of the regular season) has opened the door for Schwartz.

Availability: Owned in 1% of leagues.
Forecast: He's a rookie on a team coached by Ken Hitchcock, so temper expectations. In deeper leagues, however, his high end talent and quality of linemates (and team) make him an intriguing pick up. May the Schwartz be with you!

Right Wings

Variously owned RWs worth adding (depending on the size of your league) or worth targeting via trade:
Jordan Eberle (81%), Blake Wheeler (80%), Ryan Callahan (75%), Shane Doan (67%), Justin Williams (62%), T.J. Oshie (60%), Michael Ryder (55%), Martin Havlat (48%), David Clarkson (45%), Drew Stafford (38%)

Nashville Predators Martin Erat, RW

Erat continues to be the "best kept secret in fantasy hockey." At least in Yahoo!Land where he is available in 2 out of 3 leagues. Despite missing nine games over the course of the season, Erat leads the Predators in scoring with 18-37-55.

Availability: Owned in 33% of leagues.
Forecast: Over his last 13 games, Erat has been a point-per-game player (5 goals, 8 assists) and posted a +6 rating, 3 PPPs and 19 SOGs. For the season, he's on pace for >70 points.

Deep league specials (owned in a small % of leagues):

Florida Panthers Mikael Samuelsson, RW

Samuelsson has been pulling 2nd line and #1 PP duty as of late and is riding a 3-game point streak (2 goals, 2 assists) in which he's posted a +1 rating, 2 PPPs (both goals), and a stout 12 SOGs.

Availability: Owned in 9% of leagues.
Forecast: A good add in deeper leagues, esp. for those looking for a boost in SOGs and PP production.

Variously owned D-men worth adding (depending on the size of your league) or worth targeting via trade:
Mark Streit (84%), Jack Johnson (74%), Jason Garrison (58%), Mark Giordano (55%), James Wisniewski (38%), Marek Zidlicky (27%), Dmitry Kulikov (22%), Jake Gardiner (6%), Andrew MacDonald (4%)

New York Islanders Travis Hamonic, D

Hamonic has flat out been on fire lately. Over his last 4 games, he has 6 points (1 goal, 5 assists), a +1 rating, 12 PIMs, 3 PPPs, and 8 SOGs.

Availability: Owned in 28% of leagues.
Forecast: Hamonic has seen good PP time over his last 10 games (nearly 40%) and increased that over the last 3 games (over 50%). Should be owned in most leagues.

Deep league specials (owned in a small % of leagues):

Phoenix Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larsson, D

Possibly the free agent acquisition of the week, OEL scored a goal in all three games, chipping in 2 assists, a +2 rating, 2 PPPs, and firing 11 SOGs.

Availability: Owned in 21% of leagues.
Forecast: Ekman-Larsson, although young, is a major talent. Output like this will eventually become the norm. If you need help on the blueline, do not hesitate to add him. For those of you in deeper leagues, consider Tim Erixon (<1%) who the Rangers hope will give them steady minutes and an offensive boost on their #2 PP unit.

Variously owned Gs worth adding (depending on the size of your league) or worth targeting via trade:
Kari Lehtonen (85%), Jaroslav Halak (84%), Brian Elliott (80%), Semyon Varlamov (65%), Nicklas Backstrom (59%), Cory Schneider (49%).

Florida Panthers Jose Theodore, G

In the Panthers fight for the Southeast Division title, it is clear that they will ride Theodore the rest of the way. He's playing superb hockey right now winning 4 of his last 5 games while posting a sparkling 1.43 GAA and .952 Save%.

Availability: Owned in 64% of leagues.
Forecast: Theodore's numbers dipped after he missed some time due to injury, but he is back to 100% again and makes a solid #2 netminder in most formats.

Edmonton Oilers Devan Dubnyk, G

Double-D is scheduled to make his 4th consecutive start tonight. He's earned it, too, winning 3 of his last 4 on the way to a 1.50 GAA and .942 Save%.

Availability: Owned in 28% of leagues.
Forecast: On the season, Dubnyk sports a respectable .910 Save%. If the Oilers ever put together something resembling an NHL-caliber D-corps, his value would rise. In the meantime, he makes a decent spot starter and/or a 3rd goalie in deeper leagues.

Now check your wire, good luck, and enjoy the games!
