Ryan Miller's Blue Steel: disastrous.
Ryan Miller's Blue Steel: disastrous.

The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.

With a bit of a low voter turnout this week, and my day today revolving around a six year old's birthday festivities, allow me to present Michael Benedicks' star selections and commentary, with honorable mentions by Cam. Thanks guys...

Three Stars of the Week

3rd Star, from the Carolina Hurricanes, numero 12, Eric Staal... maybe the most impressive thing about Eric Staal's turn around is the plus/minus. On January 31st, he was a disgusting minus-26. Only five weeks later he's at minus-13. I hope some of our readers are smarter than I am and bought low on this guy back then.

2nd Star, from the Detroit Red Wings, numero 55, Niklas Kronwall... with 2+5=7 and a plus-3 in three games. Like both Cam and I mentioned, those consecutive three point games came out of nowhere and he scored the Red Wings' only goal today to put the exclamation point on the week.

1st Star, from the Buffalo Sabres, numero 30, Ryan Miller... three games, three wins, two shutouts, 1.00 gaa, and .974 sv%. This was not quite as much of a no brainer as Erik Karlsson last week, but come on, the guy shuts out the Sharks and the Ducks on back to back nights then goes into Vancouver and wins against the best the West has to offer. Talk about a western road swing for the ages. He single handedly has Buffalo back in the playoff race. Nicely done.

HM: Kevin Shattenkirk (4GP, 2+4=6, 16 SOG, 3 PPP), Ray Emery (3-0, 1.12 GAA, 1.59 SV%)

Rookie Star of the Week: Gabriel Landeskog (COL) with three assists, seven PIM, and 17 shots. Gotta go with this kid again after he showed some guts and dropped the gloves to fight Jack Johnson. Johnson was probably just mad that after the trade he'll have to wait until the 2014 Olympics to play any meaningful hockey.

Breakout Star of the Week: Evander Kane (WPG) with 2+3=5, plus-3, two PIM, 15 shots in just TWO GAMES! Us FHS folk don't miss an opportunity to give praise to our boy EK, that's for sure. If he played an extra game or two then he'd be in the top three stars for sure.

Breakdown of the Week: Jason Pominville (BUF). We've come to expect much more than no points, a minus-3 and just four shots in three games (ironically the Sabres won all three) from him. After playing at almost exactly a point per game, he's gone five straight with no points.

HM: Henrik Sedin (3 GP, 1 assist, minus-1)

Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): Ray Emery (19% owned) with three games, three wins, 1.13 gaa, and .959 sv%, In one of those wins he came in for an ineffective Corey Crawford and gave the Blackhawks the chance to win, which they did.

HM: Teddy Purcell (40% owned, 2+4=6 in 3 games)

FHS: Thursday Night Live! Star of the Week: Congratulations to Calvin for his big win in last Thursday's over/under/pick 'em competition. Calvin wasn't skunked in a single game. He had not one, but TWO triples - WPG/Over/Kane and CGY/Over/Jokinen - and in every other game he had at least the winner or the O/U correct, if not both. Pretty impressive stuff. I'll be back this Thursday with a huge twelve game slate - watch for tomorrow's post where you can submit your picks.
