Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #24

New, 9 comments

The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.

Three Stars of the Week

3rd Star, from the New York Islanders, numero 12, Josh Bailey... he would have been higher on this list but it's tough to give first star to a guy who is at best on your bench but more likely n your FA pool. Bailey had a fine week though, with 2+6=8, plus-2, four PIM and a couple of PPP. FHS Votes: 1 first, 1 second.

2nd Star, from the Boston Bruins, numero 33, Zdeno Chara... four games, seven assists, plus-6, and 11 shots for the big man, and he's on another nice run with 3+9=12 in his past 11. He's at 52 points on the year, a career-best, and plus-33 is good for second overall in the NHl. FHS Votes: 1 first, 1 second.

1st Star, from the New Jersey Devils, numero 30, Martin Brodeur... 3-0-0, 1.62 GAA, .938 SV%, and one shutout. It was an "on" week for Marty - he really stepped up for those brave enough to start him, as he had lost four straight games coming in. Nice rebound week for the living legend. FHS Votes: 2 firsts.

Honorable mention: Ryan Malone (4 GP, 6 goals, 9 PIM), Nikita Nikitin (4 GP, 2+4=6, plus-5), 11 SOG, Mike Smith (2-0, 2 shutouts, 82saves)

Rookie Star of the Week: Allen York (CBJ) - fate finally had enough of the Blue Jackets losing ways, and with Curtis Sanford already injured, Steve Mason was knocked out Wednesday morning with a puck to the face in practice. Enter Allen York for our most unlikely rookie week this year. Three games, three wins, 1.70 GAA, and .945 SV% and step up if you benefited from it. Anyone? Anyone??

HM: Brayden Schenn (4 GP, 2+2=4, 6 PIM, 7 SOG)

Breakout Star of the Week: Nikita Nikitin (CBJ) - big week for Blue Jackets this week and Nikitn was really just as good as our second star Chara. In four games, Nikitin finished with 2+4=6, plus-5, eleven shots and a PPG. Over 82 games, his stats this year prorate to 10+34=44. And he had zero points in the seven games he played with the Blues this year, so his numbers after the trade are even more impressive.

HM: Ryan Malone (4 GP, 6 goals, 9 PIM)

Breakdown of the Week: Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT)... Michael Benedicks, take it away: "this is an easy one, Marc-Andre Fleury at 0-3-0 with a 5.31 GAA and .788 SV%. Coming into this week, you had to feel good about having the flower in your net. He had just won 10 of his last 11 games. For as good as he was for that stretch, he was just as bad during this last week. Absolutely brutal stats that HAD to kill a lot of teams' fantasy playoff chances".

Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): all of this week's choices have already been mentioned above, but here are their Yahoo! ownership numbers: Ryan Malone (18%), Nikita Nikitin (8%), Josh Bailey (8%). I've said it before but it bears repeating - for excellent, detailed analysis of potential FAs, check out Diomedes7's Free Agents and Trade Targets column, posted here every Sunday in time to set your lineups for weekly H2H leagues. .

FHS: Thursday Night Live! Stars of the Week: give it up for FHS readers Edanger6 nd MasterOfPuppets and our very own Michael Benedicks for finishing in a three-way tie for first place in last Thursday's over/under/pick 'em comp. Let's give Benedicks a slight edge here though, as between the three winners he had the only triple, taking Minny to win, the under, and Koivu for the GWG. Nice! This Thursday will be the last TNL of the regular season - hope you can tune in.
