Weekend CrowdScouting

Put on your scouting pants and help us out

Bruce Bennett

Regular intro...

Surely most of you have heard of crowdsourcing, which is defined (by wikipedia) as "the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community".

So I had a thought... why can't we bring this concept to FHS?  Like seriously, we have a great online community, you guys are watching the games just like we are and you guys are just as much experts as any of us.

Whoever is writing up the daily dosage or injury updates can only watch a game or three and then has to rely on other sources, highlights, boxscores & recaps to come up with the content for their post.  So dream with me for a sec... let's say we had multiple people watching every game each night through fantasy goggles and reporting on what they noticed.  That way it would be like we were all watching every game each night!  Powerful stuff, I know.

Alright, so let's try CrowdScouting out.  So do what you do this weekend, watch the games you would normally watch and if you see anything that you think would help out your fellow FHSers, then drop it in the comments or tweet us (@TheScouts or #Crowdscouting).  Here's just a few examples of things you should let everyone know about:

  • Goalies that look shaky
  • Interesting line combos & PP units
  • Who is getting all the TOI?
  • Somebody who looks hurt
  • Players creating scoring chances, hitting posts or near misses

Hell, a live blog may even break out if the joint is jumping... you just never know.

I'll kick things off with a few items from last night:

Wild one in Philly last night... beyond all the dust-ups, notables included Joel Ward with a hat-job, Jason Chimera had 1+3=4 and Braden Holtby recorded the shutout.  Ward now has 6+4=10 for the season but his 31.6% sh% doesn't lead me to believe that he can sustain this.  Chimera now has a goal in four straight (4+5=9 during the streak).  Holtby finished with a win, shutout & a fight... can we call this a Ron Hextall Hat-Trick???

Brian Elliott (31 saves) & Ben Bishop (31 saves) with your other donuts of the night.  That's now eight wins on the season for Bishop to go with nice ratios (2.17 & .924).

Semyon Varlamov with your other goaltending performance of note as he stopped 27 of 29 to claim his eighth win just two days after spending the night in jail.

More amazingness from Alexander Steen as he scored for the sixth straight game and has a goal in all but one of his 11 games to start the season!  His sh% sits at 35% right now but who cares of this doesn't continue, his owners will take as much of this as he has to give.

Chris Stewart with his first goal of the season last night and first point in nine games... so not a stellar start but maybe this is the beginning of something.

Next to Holtby, let's give our 2nd best fantasy line of the night to Gabriel Landeskog for his G, seven PIMs, four shots & four hits. Extra credit for sending Chiasson to the room after this beatdown...

Frans Nielsen tied the game with a 3rd period goal and won it in the shootout.  He's just playing like a wild animal this year with 8+8=16 in 13 games.  His career high is 17 goals in a season, so he looks on his way to smashing that.  His 26.7% will also set a p.b., since it will surely last all year.

Three point night for Jason Pominville and he now has 5+1=6 over his last three games.  He's forming a dynamic duo with Mikael Granlund as Granny had two A1 and has six assists over his last four games.

Return of the Mac... The Flames have placed Joey MacDonald on waivers and he's likely returning to the AHL.  Guess his .885 sv% through seven games wasn't cutting it.  Help is on the way though as Reto Berra will replace him, he of the .908 sv% in the AHL so far.... umm, ok.  Well at least he was named the best goalie in Switzerland last year despite just a .906 sv%???

Alright, what say you?
