Wednesday's NHL Fantasy Hockey News

A fantasized look at NHL action from Tuesday night

Jeff Gross
The game between Carolina and Philadelphia was suspended due to blizzard like conditions but there were still 9 other games that hit the ice. I'll stick with the highlight routine mentioning the standouts but feel free to discuss other notables not mentioned.

Florida Panthers 4 vs Buffalo Sabres 3

Drew Stafford (2G, 1A, 5SOG, 1 Hit) now has points in B2B games. A pretty disappointing campaign for Stafford owners though as he only has 17 points in 44GP, to go with 107SOG and a -8 rating.

Probably the only time you will see Ed Jovanovski mentioned here but he was productive in just his 9th game of the season with 1G, 1A, +3, 2PIM, 1SOG, 3 Hits and 1BS. He played 15 minutes TOI and was used mostly for killing penalties.

St. Louis Blues 1 vs New Jersey Devils 7

So yeah, Elliott and Halak owners will not be happy with this outing as they both allowed a combined 7 goals on 23 shots. Elliott took the L though when he was yanked after allowing 3 goals on the first 9 shots.

Damien Brunner (1G, 2A, 3SOG) returned from injury today much to the delight of his owners. He receives a good amount of PP time too (3:33) so feel free to inject him back into your lineup.

Honorable mention to Eric Gelinas (1G, 2A, +2, 2SOG, 1 Hit) who now has 6 points in his last 5 games and 22 points now in 40GP. He is also receiving second PP duties.

New York Islanders 5 vs New York Rangers 3

Rick Nash (2G, 2PIM, 6SOG, 1BS) now has a 3 game goal scoring streak with 5 goals in that span.

John Tavares (3A, +1, 2PIM, 4SOG) is now tied for second in the league with 62 points. He is riding a 4 game point streak.

Honorable mention goes to Thomas Vanek (1G, 1A, 5SOG, 1 Hit) for extending his point streak to 6 games and 8G, 15A in his last 17 games.

Ottawa Senators 2 vs Washington Capitals 0

No Ovechkin and a great bounce back game for Craig Anderson stopping all 34 shots he faced for his third goose egg of the year. He hasn't been spectacular this year but we have seen flashes of what his owners expect from him recently. Let's hope this kickstarts a good run for him.

Jared Cowen (7), Chris Phillips (6) and Erik Karlsson (6) lead the Sens in the hit department. A good night for those in leagues that count em.

Los Angeles Kings 3 vs Columbus Blue Jackets 5

Make that 7 wins in a row for the Blue Jackets. Impressive!

RJ Umberger (2G, +2, 4SOG, 1BS) lead the way here with over 17 minutes TOI. He now has 13G and 13A in 49GP.

Honorable mention goes out to the Wiz, James Wisniewski (2A, +1, 2SOG, 1 Hit) as this was his 5th straight game of recording at least a point and he now has 30 points in 42GP

Minnesota Wild 0 vs Dallas Stars 4

Alex Goligoski with a solid effort (2A, +1, 2SOG, 2BS) as he looks to be turning things around. He now has points in 4 of his last 5 games. Hang in there Goli owners (me)

Worth noting that Valeri Nichuskin received just under 14 minutes TOI. He is still seeing time on the top line but got only 43 seconds on the PP, on a night that saw the Stars have 7 powerplays.

Toronto Maple Leafs 5 vs Colorado Avalanche 2

Phil Kessel (2G, 8SOG) is now on pace for 41G and 82 points. After firing 8 shots last night, he now has 193SOG in 51GP, good enough for 3rd in the league.

Tyler Bozak (2A, +1, 2SOG, 1Hit, 1BS) continues to cash in while playing on the top line with Kessel and JVR and receives top PP time. Why is he always underrated?

Honorable mention to Nathan MacKinnon (2G, 5SOG, 1Hit) for ending a 3 game slide here. He is now up to 15G and 16A in 48GP.

Vancouver Canucks 2 vs Edmonton Oilers 1

So Kellan Lain get's thrown out of his first career game just 2 seconds in and follows that up with his first career goal on his first career shot last night. He only received just under 6 minutes TOI but I don't know what else he can do to top that to start his career

Roberto Luongo shined in the first game without Torts stopping 28-29. I am one of those who doesn't believe he has the #1 starting job nailed down for Team Canada but he sure looks good right now.

Winnipeg Jets 3 vs Anaheim Ducks 2

Welcome back Evander Kane who had 1G, 1A, +2, 1SOG, 2Hits, 3BS to help put an end to the Ducks home winning streak.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 40-42 for the win but can there be a more frustrating goalie to own? Hold on a minute though. He has now won 4 straight games allowing no more then 2 goals each in that stretch. Are we looking at a rejuvenation or just a lucky run? Something worth monitoring but if the Jets are to continue on this roll, they need Pavs to roll too.

That's it for me this week but as always, feel free to mention any notables I did not discuss below. And don't forget to follow @TheScouts for regular updates from around the NHL or myself @Pope604 for the random well spaced out thoughts.
