Wednesday's NHL Fantasy Hockey News

A fantasized look at NHL action from Tuesday night

Paul Bereswill
I am going to continue the trend of just reviewing a couple players from each game that stood out for me from last night's games. As always, use the comments section below to talk about anyone I did or did not discuss. I'm on an incredible run in my fantasy playoffs where I advanced to the semi finals in the FHS Dynasty league. Bryz helped me out big time with a shutout last night. So how are all of you doing? Will my cinderella run continue past this week? Stay tuned...

Boston Bruins 4 vs New Jersey Devils 2

Patrice Bergeron (1G, 1A, +2, 2SOG, 1 Hit, 2BS) now has points in B2B games after going two games without a point. This outing brings him up to 20G, 28A, +34 and 193SOG in 69GP

Milan Lucic (5PIM, 4SOG, 3 Hits, 1BS) is now pointless in B2B games after running up 6 points in 4 games. But at least he was getting it done with PIMs, SOG and Hits for his owners.

Damien Brunner is pointless in B2B games and only registered just over 12 minutes TOI. But he did pick up 2:29 in PP time.

Minnesota Wild 6 vs New York Islanders 0

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 36 shots he faced for the shutout which as an owner in the playoffs, I couldn't be happier. Especially since my opponent has both Rask and Varlamov. This was Bryz's 2nd shutout of the year and first win since February 3rd when he was still an Oiler

Matt Moulson (2G, 1A, +2, 2SOG, 1BS) in his return to the island snapped a 4 game drought with this output. He also saw the most PP time with 4:06. The next closest was Ryan Suter at 2:32 but this was probably due to the lopsided game.

Mikael Granlund (1G, +1, 2PIM, 2SOG) continues to roll notching his 5th point in the last 5 games.

Honorable mention in a losing cause to Anders Lee (2PIM, 8SOG, 2 Hits) for being the only player that showed up for the Islanders. He had 5 points in his last 3 games until they hit the Bryz wall.

Dallas Stars 1 vs Pittsburgh Penguins 5

An impressive outing for Jeff Zatkoff stopping 32-33 SOG for the win. In the 16 games he suited up this year, he has a respictable 11-4-1 record with .918SV% and 2.52GAA. He also rattled off 7 straight wins between November and December but in his last 5 games have looked like this..W, L, W, L, W....

Lee Stempniak (1G, 2A, +2, 2SOG, 1 Hit) put a halt to a two game slide. If he was dropped during that mini slide by an impatient owner I trust you acted quickly

He won't be available but Sidney Crosby at it again (2G, 1A, +3, 7SOG)...

Carolina Hurricane 3 vs Columbus Blue Jackets 1

It was the Anton Khudobin show as he stopped 46-47 SOG! Crazy stuff there. But like I said last week neither him nor Ward had been playing like they wanted the #1 job. This is definately a good sign though for Khudobin owners. Let's see if he can keep it going as I can see Ward on the move in the Summer if the Canes believe enough in him

Jordan Staal (4PIM, 2SOG, 5 Hits) had his 6 game point streak (3G, 6A) snapped last night. But when he isn't scoring he is getting it done in other ways for us poolies. Throughout that entire streak I had him on my bench as I couldn't see him replacing anyone I already was using. If he hits the scoresheet again next game I may have to revisit this decision

Colorado Avalanche 3 vs Montreal Canadiens 6

Poor J.S. Giguere getting thrown into this game on the day Patrick Roy returned to Montreal for the first time as a coach. I read yesterday that they planned on giving Varlamov a couple games rest this week so take note Varly owners. Anyways, Giggy stopped 30-35 for the loss and word is that he will be retiring at year end

Thomas Vanek (3G, 2PIM, 5SOG) with the hatty and his firsts as a Canadien. Let's see if this is the start of something for him

Matt Duchene now has B2B 2A games

Cody McLeod had 9 Hits on the night to go with 5PIM

New York Rangers 8 vs Ottawa Senators 4

Alright, let's see who didn't score here....the only notable I would say is Martin St. Louis

Derek Brassard (2G, 1A, +4, 3SOG, 4 Hits) broke an 8 game pointless streak. His TOI was 18:23 and saw 2:30 of PP time.

I don't usually like quoting ice times in blowout games because when a game get's out of hand, 3rd and 4th line players tend to see more playing time as a result (if they're on the winning end)

If your an Ottawa fan, you can at least be happy that Bobby Ryan (1G, -1, 2PIM, 6SOG, 1BS) scored his first goal after going 7 games without one. He is now riding a 3 game point streak

Toronto Maple Leafs 2 vs Detroit Red Wings 3

It really is unbelievable that with all the injuries Detroit has, they just find a way to keep on winning. Credit needs to go to management and coaching staff. Credit also needs to go to Gustav Nyquist (2G, +1, 6SOG)

Gustav Nyquist in 43GP this year is up to 19G, 16A, +8, 4GWG, 117SOG and a 16.2S%

David Clarkson (-1, 2SOG, 0Hits, 0BS) to give him 4G and 6A in 48GP. Hmmmm...

Chicago Blackhawks 2 vs Philadelphia Flyers 3 OT

Scott Hartnell (2G, +2, 5SOG, 2 Hits) is on a point for every other game pattern but as Giroux goes, so does everyone else...speaking of which

Claude Giroux (1G, 1A, +3, 4SOG, 2 Hits, 2BS) had the GWG in overtime. He also extended his point streak to 4 games or 11 of his last 13 games

I sat Steve Mason in my league for this game because I simply didn't trust him against the high powered offense that Chicago brings. But it didn't matter in the end as Ray Emery got the call stopping 23-25 for the win. I was surprised to see Antti Raanta get the call for the Blackhawks over Crawford but he played well stopping 34-37. I have high hopes for him in the long run.

Buffalo Sabres 1 vs Calgary Flames 3

Joni Ortio stopped 13-14 shots for the win. The low shots against aside, he has impressed me since being called up, even though I have been praising him since early in the year. In the 8GP so far, his record is now 4-4 with a .906SV% and 2.16GAA. I think the Flames have something in this Finnish netminder

Mike Cammalleri (1G, +1, 5SOG) now has 5G, 2A in his last 5 games.

Nashville Predators 1 vs Edmonton Oilers 5

Jordan Eberle (2G,1A, +2, 5SOG) ended a 3 game slide last night. His name comes up often in trade rumours and as an Eberle owner, I hope he doesn't go anywhere. At 23 years, the young Oilers are just coming into their own and are expected to be one of the higher scoring teams for years to come. Of course, you already know this. Let's hope they take that jump next year.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1G, 2A, +2, 3SOG, 1BS) also ended a 3 game slide.

Victor Fasth (28-29) to improve his record to 4-2-2 with a .907SV% and 2.43GAA. As mentioned last week, I think him and Scrivens will have a back and forth battle as long as he can stay healthy.

Washington Capitals 3 vs Anaheim Ducks 2

Nicklas Backstrom (2A, -1, 2SOG, 1 Hit) with another solid outing. How good do you think Backstrom would be without Ovechkin? Or vice versa? Give Backstrom 13G, 53A and 160SOG in 69GP. He is however a -17 on the year. The last time he finished a minus was in 2011 where he was a -4...shortened year.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 43-45 for his 3rd straight win. I would be targeting Halak in the off-season and he now sports a 27-11-4 record with a .918SV% and 2.25GAA. I think the caps with the addition of Kuznetsov are going to be one of the top teams next year. And Halak stands to benefit.

Ryan Getzlaf (1A, 7SOG, 2 Hits, 2BS) has 6 points in his last 6GP.

Hampus Lindholm (2A, +1, 5SOG, 1Hit, 1 BS) now has points in B2B games. He has been a nice surprise on the backend for the Ducks where he has 5G and 19A in 65GP. Look for him to improve on those numbers next year after getting his feet wet.

Florida Panthers 3 vs San Jose Sharks 2

So hey, Roberto Luongo is enjoying being back in a Panthers jersey hey? He stopped 52 of 54 shots he faced for the win. What a game for him. I have to think these games/performances/wins by him will be few and far between due to the young team in front of him but he is showing that he can still get it done. He is a must own for starts alone next year but don't count on too many wins

Brandon Pirri (1G, 1A, +2, 4SOG) had a nice little game. In fact, he now has 7 points over his last 5 games. Worth a short term pickup if you have the room but it is worth noting he only saw 13:23 TOI but 1:34 on the PP

Jimmy Hayes (1A, +2, 2PIM, 3SOG, 2 Hits, 3BS) extended his point streak to 4 games with 2G and 3A over that span. Look for him to get traded to Vancouver in the off-season. I kid....maybe.

As you can tell, there were a number of Sharks working on their SOG totals last night. Among them were Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture each with 7 shots a piece

That's it for me this week. Feel free to comment on any player mentioned or not in the comments below! Don't forget to follow @TheScouts for regular updates or myself at @Pope604 for the random well spaced out thoughts. Good luck to those of you in Fantasy Playoffs!
