Our Yahoo! Advice - Reviewed One Year Later

New, 4 comments
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Okay, in advance of our upcoming take on Yahoo's 2014-15 rankings, here's a look at last year's advice and whether we were either right or ruined your life. You can read last year's piece here.

For our self-grades in this article, I used the following tiers to reflect by how many ranking spots we were correct:

0-5 C-
5-15 C
15-30 C+
30-50 B
50-70 A
70+ A+

If we steered you wrong, it's an F. No Ds or Es here folks - if we don't pass, we FAIL.

Below you will see last year's Y! rank, player's name and our advice at the time, followed by their ranking at the end of last season, our self-grade, and this year's rank. Got it?

We said these guys should have been ranked higher (higher, as in closer to Crosby):

16. Claude Giroux Mentioned as a potential top 5-6 pick in most drafts.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 4
> C+
> 2014-15 rank: 8

20. Taylor Hall 9th overall in scoring last year, could improve on that.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 36 (did improve to 6th in points, but minus-15 hurts)
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 21

27. James Neal Last year he was ranked #15 and we thought that was too low. With a healthy Evgeni Malkin, Neal will exceed this ranking.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 16
> C+
> 2014-15 rank: 35 (hello Nashville)

32. Erik Karlsson 15 forwards between Subban and Karlsson?
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 20
> C+
> 2014-15 rank: 17

35. Kris Letang See Karlsson.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 407 (we were so very wrong)
> F-
> 2014-15 rank: 37

38. Jason Spezza A top 5-10 C if healthy.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 79 (minus-26 killed him)
> F
> 2014-15 rank:44

42. Ryan Getzlaf 11th in points last year and a multi-cat beast.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 10
> B
> 2014-15 rank: 6

48. Jamie Benn Could explode with Seguin, should be higher regardless.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 7
> B
> 2014-15 rank:13

51. Evander Kane Better than last year's 67 rank, but you know we love us some Evander.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 139\
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 83

61. Jakub Voracek 18th in scoring last season, deserves a bit more credit here.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 39
> C+
> 2014-15 rank:85

64. Joffrey Lupul.  IF - and we all know it's a big if - he can stay healthy, he'll end up a lot higher than 64.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 179
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 117

76. Ryan Kesler A healthy season and he's better than this rank.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 98
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 68

81. Logan Couture  This is an after-the-fact addition, submitted by Willis in the comments. Great catch, thanks! As Willis writes, "at #81 he is only about 40 spots below where he should be. Would anyone take Kesler over him?"
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 66
> C+
> 2014-15 rank: 26

84. Max Pacioretty Should be in Evander Kane territory.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 34
> B (missed an A by one)
> 2014-15 rank: 37

98. Mike Green 1st in D goals last year with 12, 82-game pace was 28+33=61.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 190
> F (for fucking of course)
> 2014-15 rank: 104

101. Jeff Carter 4th in goals last season behind only Ovechkin, Stamkos and Tavares.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 64
> B
> 2014-15 rank: 76

109. Jeff Skinner Production stunted by concussions the last two seasons.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 83
> C+
> 2014-15 rank:52

120. Patrik Elias Will give you better production than this ranking indicates.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 164
> F
> 2014-15 rank:169

121. Oliver Ekman-Larsson 23rd-ranked D-man? He could easily be a top 10 guy by the end of the year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 106
> C+
> 2014-15 rank:74

123. Jarome Iginla  Boston's new trigger-man. Could lead the Bs in scoring this year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 25
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:84

127. Justin Williams Continues to get no respect.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 107
> C+
> 2014-15 rank:164

129. Cory Schneider  People underestimate the fact that Schneids can steal games...and jobs.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 84
> B
> 2014-15 rank:47

141. Chris Stewart  Led the Blues in points last season, but that's not saying much. Still...
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 218
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:185

142. Jonathan Bernier  Sure, Reimer will battle, but if you think Bernier wasn't brought in to be the starter...you are incorrect.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 161
> F on the ranking, A on the rest
> 2014-15 rank:105

153. Jaroslav Halak So, the highest-paid goalie on the best defensive team in the league is ranked 31st for goalies? I'd be taking Halak top-15 in most leagues.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 48
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:89

154. Vladimir Tarasenko  If Hitchcock lengthens the leash a bit, we might see a nice season.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 188
> F
> 2014-15 rank:157

216. Ryan McDonagh  Mentioned a lot as a sleeper this year, with good reason. Depends how Vigneault uses him.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 135
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:90

224. Brandon Dubinsky  Finished last season with a flurry of points, should be well-used by the Jackets.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 81
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:97

234. Michael Ryder  Top 40 in goals in lockout season, top 12 the year before.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 289
> F
> 2014-15 rank:234

236. Jonathan Drouin  Probably worth a flier before guys like Strome and Conacher, who are ranked ahead of him.
> Finished 2013-14 not ranked
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:112

242. Alexandre Burrows  In four seasons before the lockout he scored 28, 35, 26 and 28 goals. On pace for 22 in lockout season.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 410
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:433

244. Shane Doan  Fading but deserves better than this.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 141
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 199

255. Nathan MacKinnon   Probably should not be ranked just behind Justin Abdelkaderand Chris Phillips.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 33
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:39

260. Colin Wilson Really impressed in his limited stint with Nashville last year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 367
> F
> 2014-15 rank:326

266. Jakob Silfverberg On pace for 229 SOG as a rookie last season.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 454
> F
> 2014-15 rank:201

270. Sven Baertschi  Will be given every chance to flourish on a weak Calgary squad.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 686
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:679

291. David Clarkson  Big money, good minutes.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 464
> F
> 2014-15 rank:324

300. Ryane Clowe  See Clarkson.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 449
> F
> 2014-15 rank:315

312. Aleksander Barkov  Some say he's as talented as any player in the 2013 draft.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 484
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 215

319. Kris Versteeg  He won't win you your pool, but deserves more respect than this.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 241
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:429

331. Bryan Bickell  Playoff performance may have been a one-off, but if not he will be a huge steal this year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 561
> F
> 2014-15 rank:519

335. Pierre-Marc Bouchard A leading candidate to fill Brad Boyes' vacant spot on the Tavares/Moulson line.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 704
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:654

336. Zack Kassian  If he sticks with the Sedins...yeah you know the rest.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 257
> A
> 2014-15 rank: 344

342. Valeri Nichushkin Has impressed in pre-season, still a wild card but could end up having the best year of the 2013 draft class.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 281
> A
> 2014-15 rank:178

343. Beau Bennett  If he ends up top six in Pittsburgh, this ranking will look like a joke.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 759
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:683

363. Steve Downie  If he can stay healthy, could be in for a nice rebound season playing with MacKinnon.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 269
> A+
> 2014-15 rank:252

365 Jake Gardiner  Crowded blue-line situation in Toronto, but if he can get a fair shot he deserves better than this rank.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 314
> A
> 2014-15 rank:193

374. Steve Ott Ranked just behind Dmitrij Jaskin, Derek Morris and Brian Gionta? Steve Ott says fuck off!
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 400
> F
> 2014-15 rank:439

367. Alex Chiasson  This might be a stretch as he played only seven games last year - but he did score 6 goals in that span.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 303
> A
> 2014-15 rank:442

485. Erik Cole Only one year removed from a 35 goal season, will get you great hit totals regardless.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 394
> A+ (really? this system is obviously flawed!)
> 2014-15 rank: 466

500. Mikhail Grabovski Three time 20 goal scorer should rebound in offensively-minded Washington.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 394
> Grabovski sucks
> 2014-15 rank:466

527. Cal Clutterbuck Guess hits weren't taken into account here. Also there has been talk of using him with Tavares and Moulson.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 386
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 465

553. Ryan Malone  Six-time 20 goal scorer, has been lining up with old buds Stamkos and St. Louis in pre-season.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 740
> F for felony
> 2014-15 rank: 737

565. Dustin Penner  If he sticks on the Getzlaf/Perry line, you may have yourselves a small later-round steal.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 184
> B
> 2014-15 rank: 396

597. Erik Johnson  Not spectacular lately, but he's not this bad.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 148
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 200

633. David Jones  Cam has a half-boner for Jones this year. He has scored 20 goals twice before (Jones, not Cam's half-boner).
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 524
> F
> 2014-15 rank:551

753. Dmitry Orlov  Could surprise in Washington this year. Had 19 points in 60 games two years ago.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 632
> F-
> 2014-15 rank: 355

755. Mikael Samuelsson Washed up? Maybe, but apparently he has looked good in pre-season.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 748
> F-
> 2014-15 rank: 749

838. Brayden McNabb Impressed in limited viewings two seasons ago.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 828
> F-
> 2014-15 rank:806

822. Torey Krug  Longish shot but played well in the playoffs and this ranking is far too low.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 115
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 99

We said these guys should be ranker lower (lower, as in closer to Dave Dziurzynski):

10. Henrik Sedin  Ahead of E. Staal. St. Louis and Giroux? Nope.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 155
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 72

17. P.K. Subban He may in fact end up deserving this ranking, but if so Karlsson and Letang should be right there with him.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 57
> B
> 2014-15 rank: 16

24. Sergei Bobrovsky 7th ranked goalie, too high for just one great year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 44 (5th ranked goalie though)
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 23

29. Carey Price 8th-ranked goalie ahead of Howard and Crawford?
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 17 (2nd in goalies)
> F-
> 2014-15 rank: 22

44. Nail Yakupov Primed for a good year, but better than Jamie Benn, Evander Kane andPatrick Sharp?
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 529
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 147

45. Tyler Seguin May end up earning this ranking, but would you take him before Semin or Voracek? Well, maybe.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 8
> F minus minus
> 2014-15 rank: 14

54. Mike Ribeiro Suggested by reader and FHS associate MasterofPuppets, good call considering Ribeiro's move to lower-scoring Phoenix.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 205
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 179

90. Alex Galchenyuk Too high for a sophomore, especially when ranked ahead of guys like Wheeler, Bergeron and Backes.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 368
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 212

94. Ondrej Pavelec 22nd-ranked goalie? Maybe the divisional shift will make a difference, but Pavs hasn't even proved he belongs inside the top 30, unless your league is only about saves and wins.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 530 (even for Pavelec this seems incorrect)
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 111 (hahahahaha)

96. Brian Elliott  Ranked ahead of Halak? Madness.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 71
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 69

117. Sergei Gonchar Should have a good year in Dallas, but probably should not be ranked ahead of Ekman-Larsson.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 440
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 294

118. Dany Heatley Ranked ahead of Elias and Iginla? Hasn't earned it lately.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 428
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 192

164. Matt Read Bump him down a couple dozen spots, like at least below Hodgson, right?
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 311
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 228

386. Nikita Kucherov  Should be a good one eventually, but his chances of making the Bolts this year are slim.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 478
> A+
> 2014-15 rank: 534

579. Scott Gomez.  On second thought, 579 sounds about right.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 658
> whatever...
> 2014-15 rank: 725

811. Chris Pronger Sadly, would probably still be a top 20 D-man. A moment of silence.
> Big guy should still be playing, what a shame.

961. Alexander Khokhlachev   Like Kucherov, probably won't make the bigs this year.
> Finished 2013-14 ranked 904 (played 1 game!)
> F
> 2014-15 rank: 337

So there you have it - plenty of hits and misses, but hopefully we helped more than we hurt. Look for our review of Yahoo's latest rankings in the next week or so. Cheers.
